Capture the Scent of a Fig Tree, March's Scent of the Month

by Anthony Munaco | 03/14/2025

The icy breath of a spring breeze rattles the crisp green leaves that surround the succulent Mediterranean figs sprouting from a nearby Ficus carica, or fig tree. As you pluck a fig from the delicate yet hardy branches, you feel its purplish-green flesh soften beneath your fingertips. The woody aromas of moss and cedarwood drift toward you as you collect more fruit to enjoy.

Introducing Fig Tree, the March Scent of the Month, available exclusively from Drift. Drawing inspiration from the fruit-bearing trees that originated in the Mediterranean and prefer warmer climates, the scent experts at Drift invite you to experience the beauty of spring as blooms bear fruit after a long winter’s slumber. Spring is a time of reawakening and infusing life with all the good things, including those that are as sweet and rewarding as figs.

Succulently Rich Mediterranean Fig

Figs are delicate, pear-shaped fruits protected by a rough skin. Although the fruit flesh is soft, the crunchiness of figs comes from the seeds within. You can easily fit a ripe fig in the palm of your hand, but these succulent fruits can grow larger.

Mediterranean figs are typically red, but they can also be amber, green, black, yellow, or purple. Throughout history, figs have often been associated with peace, prosperity, and fertility. This rich, self-pollinating fruit belongs to the mulberry family and must be eaten fresh or dried shortly after ripening.

As part of the Mediterranean diet, figs are high in natural sugars. Although similar to dates, they’re actually not as sweet. Figs are often used in pastries and desserts, including jams, rolls, and biscuits.

Beyond their decadent taste, figs emit a complex aroma that’s both grounding and pleasantly sweet. Like many fruits, figs smell both of the earth and the juicy flesh within their teardrop-shaped outer shell. The underlying earthy and fresh scent traces figs back to their origins, the inspiration for this month’s exclusive scent: the fig tree.

The Crunch of Crisp Green Leaves

The five-pointed, sometimes three-pointed leaves of the various species of fig trees almost look as if they could gently fold together to create their signature fruit. Verdant and plentiful among the fig tree’s branches, these crisp green leaves feature many small minor veins that reach out as if to explore the many paths life takes. While no two leaves look exactly alike, they’re similar enough to belong together, dangling from the fig tree’s branches until their life cycle comes to an end.

As leaves break from the tree that sustained them, they begin to wither away. Sections once green with life now fade, the minor veins now crisscrossed with small cracks that threaten to give way with the slightest touch. These crisp leaves aren’t quite dead yet, but they add a sharp earthy note to the fruit hanging above, the purest example of the dichotomy Mother Nature tirelessly presides over: that of life and death.

Rising Majestic Cedarwood

All too familiar with the changing seasons and yet stronger and taller for it, cedar trees manifest in their own shapes and sizes depending on their individual species. The cone-like appearance or layers of stacked boughs characteristic of cedar trees can make them challenging to identify. However, at the height of spring, full of cheerful birdsong, the beauty of these cedar trees is unmistakable.

To our olfactory senses, cedarwood has a dry, woody scent reminiscent of loamy roots and fresh, new sprigs reaching toward the sun’s bountiful rays. Like some woods, cedars also have a slightly sweet smell cloaked in a citrusy, camphor-like fragrance. This mix of aromas betrays the wisdom so carefully logged into each grain of cedarwood, year after year.

A Soft Carpet of Lush Moss

Nature’s memory foam springs back after a light touch, each diminutive tuft of moss contributing to a vast, vivid carpet that covers the forest floor. Despite its prevalence, moss features a subtle fragrance not unlike that of the trees that rise above it. Earthy, fresh, and slightly woody, lush moss encapsulates the refreshing scent of a forest after a gentle spring drizzle, the leaves and branches and stems misted with thousands of drops of cleansing water.
