5 Ways to Maintain Your Tesla Model S and Keep It Smelling Fresh

by Daniel Truax | 05/14/2025

Tesla’s Model S electric sedan stands as the proud flagship of a brand that seamlessly blends caring for the environment with a sense of elegance. Use the five techniques listed below to maintain your Tesla Model S and the three equally sophisticated premium Drift car fresheners to keep it smelling fresh. No other Tesla Model S accessories can match the distinctive and stylish design of a luxury car freshener, available exclusively from Drift.

5 Ways to Maintain Your Tesla Model S

In many ways, eco-friendly sedans like the Tesla Model S require less maintenance than your average gas-powered vehicle. However, their electric design also necessitates new maintenance protocols, such as lubricating the brake calipers or avoiding frequent full charges. Below, explore five ways to maintain your Tesla Model S, and keep reading to discover a trio of fresh-smelling accessories you won’t want to leave the driveway without.

1. Vehicle Firmware Updates

The amount of technology that powers various Tesla Model S functions is one of the brand’s hallmarks. However, all those technological features require routine updating to ensure you’re running the latest and most improved firmware. You can easily perform over-the-air (OTA) updates yourself if you’re connected to the internet, or you can visit a dealership or call a technician line to initiate updates from their end.

2. Inspect Tire Tread

Every car owner should routinely inspect their tire tread, regardless of whether they drive an electric vehicle (EV) or a gas-powered car. You can easily use a penny or a quarter to measure the tire tread depth, which must be greater than 2/32 of an inch to be safe. Don’t forget to follow that up with a visual inspection of the tread to ensure there are no foreign objects or uneven wear.

A Tesla’s tires must carry more weight than the average sedan or SUV because of the heavy electric battery that sits low on the frame. The additional weight can create more friction between the rubber and the road’s surface, and where there’s friction, there’s heat and subsequent wear. While replacement intervals vary beyond just the weight distributed among all four tires, it’s a good idea to keep a close eye on your Tesla Model S sedan’s tires to ensure they’re safe to drive on.

3. Lubricate the Brake Calipers

EVs like the Tesla Model S often rely on regenerative braking rather than the traditional braking system to bring the car to a stop. Since components like the brake pads and rotors are used less often than on a gas-powered vehicle, the calipers require lubrication for continued function. Tesla owners who live in areas where they salt the roads should definitely add lubricating the brake calipers to their routine maintenance list.

4. Change the Cabin Air Filter

Unlike gas-powered engines, a Tesla Model S has only one air filter that purifies outside air and directs it into the interior. Maintaining your Model S requires routinely changing this filter to remove trapped particles and refresh the air supplied to the cabin. You can also purchase a reusable cabin air filter to reduce waste.

5. Avoid Frequent Full Charges

It’s human nature to want to charge a battery up to 100%, but that’s not following best practices in maintaining Tesla electric batteries long-term. Instead, Tesla owners should charge their Model S to 80%–90% before unplugging it. While this charging routine may cut down on range somewhat, it’s in the interest of maintaining the battery’s longevity.

Must-Have Tesla Model S Accessories to Keep it Smelling Fresh

Maintaining your vehicle can help extend its longevity, but enjoying every drive is just as important. The three luxury scent products below—all available exclusively from Drift—can help you experience a different kind of drive behind the wheel of your Tesla Model S. If you’re looking for Tesla Model S accessories that are good for your car and the environment, look no further.

Wood Car Freshener

Made from sustainably sourced alder wood, Drift’s Wood car freshener is one of our bestselling products that continues to delight drivers of electric and gas-powered vehicles alike. Our scent experts infuse each precisely cut alder wood scent block with carefully selected essential and fragrance oil blends. These scent blocks last for up to 30 days—or more—when exposed to air, but will keep in their original packaging if left out of direct sunlight until you’re ready to use them.

Stone Car Freshener

Drift’s Stone car freshener features a clean-cut section of porous organic stone that, like the natural Wood car freshener, easily mounts to the provided metal visor clip via a magnet. To place the premium car freshener in your vehicle, simply snug it onto your driver’s or passenger’s side visor and enjoy the premium scents it passively emits. The metal visor clip ensures no oil blends come into contact with your visor or headliner fabrics, so you don’t have to worry about any unsightly stains.

Metal Car Freshener

In contrast to the two previous Drift car fresheners, our Metal car freshener clips directly onto your vehicle’s air vent blades. A smaller footprint makes this signature car freshener ideal for second and third-row seating. Passengers can also adjust the scent intensity level to suit their preference via a small tab on the bottom of the stylish car freshener.

Enjoy Your Fresh Tesla Model S for Years to Come

Drift luxury car fresheners might not be able to charge your Tesla, but they can certainly refresh the interior to create a pleasant and welcoming ambiance to elevate every drive.
